UNRV.com has as much information as any reference book, if not more, spread throughout the expansive yet easy to navigate website.

From “About UNRV“:

UNRV Roman Empire aims to give visitors a substantial look into what Rome was. We will delve into all aspects of its society and those of her neighbors, and perhaps share a greater understanding of our own world through that of the past.

Features:

a complete (and I mean complete) list of emperors (Byzantine included)

an entire section of the website dedicated to the economic features of the empire (at one point broken down to the commodity!)

hundreds (my guess) of reviews of books covering all things ancient Roman

We know of their permanent position beside one another on Mount Rushmore. However, there are at least two more pieces of historical minutia that connect the two Presidents.

President Theodore Roosevelt was born in October of 1858, making him only 6 years old when President Lincoln was assassinated. What could a 6-year-old remember of such an event, you ask? Probably not much, unless he was able to see the funeral procession through New York City from an upstairs window as it passed by his grandfather’s house.

President Roosevelt recalled the vivid memory he had of the event when a second historical connection occurred. The day before his first inauguration in 1905 (his first term he was not elected but rather succeeded McKinley after his assassination), President Roosevelt received a gift from his future secretary of state, John Hay. Hay was President Lincoln’s personal assistant, secretary, and close friend. That would be connection enough, were it not for the gift: a single strand of President Lincoln’s hair removed during his autopsy set under glass mounted on a ring. President Roosevelt wore it the next day.

In light of Fathers Day, I couldn’t help but wonder how tense such a day would be at the Franklin household.

Though he was one of seventeen children, Benjamin Franklin fathered only three children: William (whose mother is to this day unknown), Francis (who died at age 4), and Sarah (affectionately know to her father as “Sally”).

It was William that caused his father the most political grief, but not because of his scandalous birth. William was in fact a Loyalist! He served as the last Royal Governor of New Jersey and remained a steadfast Loyalist throughout the American War of Independence, despite his father’s role as one of the most prominent Patriots during the war. In 1782, William was exiled to England, where he lived out the rest of his life, needless to say, away from his estranged father.

From “the AHC’s Mission” page:

The Authentic History Center is comprised of artifacts and sounds from American popular culture. It was created to teach that the everyday objects in society have authentic historical value and reflect the social consciousness of the era that produced them. Authentic also means conforming to fact, and therefore worthy of trust, reliance, or belief. To meet this definition by presenting an authentic interpretation of American history is our ultimate goal. When a collection is whole enough to be considered an authentic representation of the sources produced about an historical event, they are presented via interpretive essay. Until then, incomplete collections are presented as digital archives without comment for individual study. Additionally, a large audio archive of speeches and news broadcasts are presented for students to experience a level of historical authenticity distinct from written sources. The Authentic History Center is an ambitious work-in-progress and always will be.

That’s right, an actual war taking place in a little over a half hour!

On August 25, 1896, the pro-British sultan of Zanzibar, Hamad bin Thuwaini, died. The very next day, he was succeeded by a not-so-pro-British sultan, Khalid bin Barghash, who refused to wait for approval by the British consulate as required by Zanzibar’s current law of succession. This was, in British opinion, grounds for war.

An ultimatum was sent to Sultan Khalid which was set to expire on August 27, at 9:00 a.m. By that time, three cruisers, two gunships, 150 marines, and between 900 to 1,000 British-loyal Zanzibaris were on standby (probably staring at there watches). At 9:02, the British vessels opened fire on the sultan’s palace. The palace immediately caught fire, disabling the sultan’s defense and sending the nearly 3,000 civilian recruits into a panic.

After the removal of the sultan’s flag from the palace, all fire stopped by 9:40. All in all, the Anglo-Zanzibar War lasted a whopping 38 minutes, earning the title as the shortest war ever.

…and Other Myths about the Founding Father

FACT: George Washington did not have wooden teeth. He should be so lucky!

From MountVernon.org:

He had false teeth, but they were not made of wood. As a matter of fact, the materials used in his false teeth were probably more uncomfortable than wood. In one set of teeth, his dentist, Dr. John Greenwood, used a cow’s tooth, one of Washington’s teeth, hippopotamus ivory, metal and springs. They fit poorly and distorted the shape of his mouth.

FACT: George Washington did not chop down a cherry tree. Ironic, since the story is supposed to be a lesson in honesty.

From MountVernon.org:

The story was invented by Parson Mason Weems who wrote a biography of George Washington shortly after Washington’s death. Since so little is known about Washington’s childhood, Weems invented several anecdotes about Washington’s early life to illustrate the origins of the heroic qualities Washington exhibited as an adult. Introduced to countless schoolchildren as a moral tale in the McGuffey Reader textbook, the parable has become a persistent part of American mythology.

FACT: George Washington was not born on February 22. Well, sort of.

From The Papers of George Washington:

February 11th was GW’s birthday according to the Julian (Old Style) calendar, but in 1752, the corrections of the Gregorian (New Style) Calendar were adopted by England, Ireland, and the colonies, and GW’s birthday became 22 February
